The upcoming week is packed with economic releases, the FOMC interest policy statement and a slew of Q4 earnings are set to be released. The Fed will meet Jan. 29 to 30 and issue its decision on interest rates at 2.15pm ET Wednesday. Fed Fund futures are pricing in a ¼ point cut and there is a 78% chance of a ½ point cut.
Economic news starts with December new-home sales on Monday and durable-goods orders on Tuesday. Wednesday will bring the preliminary fourth-quarter GDP, which should shed some light on where the economy stands. Inflation news in the form of the Core PCE will be Thursday. The closely watched January jobs report comes Friday along with the unemployment figures, which jumped to 5% in December and helped to fuel concerns about a recession.
Nine members of the Dow Industrial Average are expected to report earnings next week, ncluding McDonald's Corp. (MCD, $54.10, +0.10) American Express Co. (AXP, $45.44, -$1.67) and Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM, $83.94, -$2.06).
Volatility will be the name of the game in the next five trading sessions and this market is not for the feint of heart.
